This is not new. The Jews as well as Christians have been persecuted since the beginning of their existence - God promised it and so did Jesus, history has shown it.
After-all, Judaism and Christianity are the same the thing accept for the huge concept of believing that Jesus is the Messiah - accept for that, they are the same. That is why the Romans left the followers of Christ alone for the first sixty-five or so years. They looked at the early Church simply as an extension of Judaism, which they already tolerated. Until Nero, discovered this subtle difference and that allowed him to persecute the Christians and blame them (conveniently) for Rome's decline. The early church clearly grew out of Judaism.
